Tidbits

Did You Know?

Review the following tidbits:

Does your weight go up or down by a pound or two?
  • Drinking 16 oz. of fluid can cause an instant gain of 1 pound.
  • Constipation can add as much as 2 pounds.
  • On vacation, the air pressure can make you retain water and add 1-3 pounds when on flights longer than 4 hours.
  • Chinese for dinner? Salty foods can add 2-3 pounds as your body retains water to dilute the sodium.
  • For you girls... hormone fluctuations in the three days leading up to your period can make your body retain up to 5 pounds of water.

You Think Jumping Rope Is Just For Little Girls?
A 155 pound adult can burn 704 calories jumping at a moderate pace for one hour. This is equivalent to running for one hour at a 10 min mile pace.

Want to find a jump rope that fits you? Hold both handles in one hand, letting the loop fall to the ground. Extend your arm to shoulder height. Your rope is the right length if the handles line up at armpit height and the loop touches the ground.

Jump like a boxer for three minutes on and one minute off – before you know it you will be ready for the ring.

Use The Stairs
One way to burn off the winter layer is by taking the stairs. Running up one flight of stairs burns off 30-40 calories (based on an industry average of 24 steps per flight).

Atlanta Fat Burners
  • 100 Colony Square in Midtown (24 floors/576 steps = 960 calories)
  • Downtown Bank of America Plaza (55 floors/1320 steps = 2200 calories)
  • Atlanta Financial Center in Buckhead (19 floors/456 steps = 760 calories)

Thirsty or Hungry?
Thirst signals are often confused with hunger signals. For people who are not used to drinking enough water they often feel the same.

Drinking water is not just to make your mouth feel less dry. Water is essential for your body to function efficiently. If you wait until you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated. One of the first signals that you aren't getting enough water is fatigue. So what do we do? We drink coffee to get a burst of energy. Coffee is a diuretic, which actually dehydrates you further, nurturing a self destructive cycle.

A tell tale sign that you are dehydrated is the color of your urine. It should be very light yellow to clear in color. Medium yellowish to nearly orange requires a trip to the water fountain.

Water helps the liver convert fat into usable energy. If you don't get enough water your kidneys are overwhelmed with concentrated fluids. This makes your liver have to do extra work. Your liver works hard to turn body fat into energy you use, but if it has to do the kidneys work then you hold onto the extra fat that would have been burned if you'd had enough water. What makes it even worse is that instead of excreting water and waste products you reabsorb used water to reuse. This is what causes water retention and bloating.

When you don't get enough water your body panics and thinks it won't get any more... so it holds on to it. The best way to get rid of water retention is to drink enough of it.
